I have always said the greatest challenge in breeding Charlies are the "Wholecolours". They have a smaller gene pool, and the Rubies are double recessive gene. This tends to mean any other conformation or health faults can be linked to this colour.
If you look at the history of the King Charles Spaniel, you will see that all Rubies in current years come down from one dog as he was the only Ruby stud available for a number of years. He was Mrs Ellison Hawkes Ruby dog, "Flame of Ainsdale".
You cannot get away with a mismarked Wholecolour, like an imperfect marking on a Blenheim or Tricolour can to some degree. Your breeding options are much more restricted in both dogs available and their quality, and in having such a limited gene pool it's difficult to avoid too close breeding.
For many years Britain had one Ruby bitch Champion, Mrs Beck's "Ch Oakorange Goldilocks". That is why our Ruby bitch, "Tickled Pink of Amantra" (Lucy), pictured below, is so important to the breed. Her Daughter and Grandaughter were the first two Black and Tan Bitch Champions in 34 years!
