Maynorth's Broken Pattern
King Charles Spaniels

Paw Print

Our first Tricolour was a lovely bitch, CH Kingscourt Katrina of Maynorth, pictured below. She had 5 different owners before us and was totally confused by all the changes. We both worked hard for 10 months to rebuild her confidence, and we showed her successfully, making up to a Champion with 5 CC's (2 with Best of Breed).

Breeding the broken colours whist giving a breeder quite a lot of scope in potential bloodlines and mix of colour, there are still some strict rules that you should abide by. Clearly any Blenheim to Blenheim mating will result in a litter that are all Blenheims. This is fine for several generations of mating but you MUST breed to a Tricolour at some stage otherwise you are in danger of losing pigment in the eyes and nose, and a loss of body markings, and depth of red colouration.

Similarly, mating Tricolour to Tricolour for too many generations leads to loss of body markings leading to an all white bodied dog. Whilst you can mate Broken colour to Wholecolour, it is not desireable if you can avoid such a mating.

Any wholecolours will carry a broken colour gene, and even if the first generation are normally marked Black and Tans, or completely red Rubies, if mated to other wholecolours in later generations, white will appear on puppies of both colours. This can take the form of a white stripe or narrow white blaze, white paws, or white on the chest and under belly. Whilst some of this may diminish over a period of time, most mismarks stay for life.

Any such marking is atypical and against the breed standard. Similarly, a Black and Tan mated to a Tricolour will result in Broken Colour puppies carrying Whole Colour genes. Future Tricolour litters will get ticking on the body legs and feet. Although not a fault in itself, it can detract from the quality of a dog, if very heavy, on the body or face. The true, typical King Charles expression can be spoilt by heavy spotting on the face making it appear messy and hard in expression as a result.

The greatest challenge at present in breeding Broken colours is to breed quality, well marked Blenheims. We have a distinct lack of quality stud dogs and show bitches in this colour. As a result there is a big increase in the number of Tricolours being shown. Dogs are losing body markings and the distinct tan markings as well. The tan pales to a washed out colour, instead of bright distinct tan as in the Breed Standard. You need the Blenheim red gene to ensure this does not happen.

With King Charles being a minority breed in almost any Country of the world the future of all four colours will be greatly improved when more dogs are imported from overseas by all breeders. This will increase the gene pool, breeding options, and thence ensure true strong colour in all four colours of these lovely spaniels.
